Jersey Princess American Holly
Ilex opaca 'Jersey Princess'
Widely considered to be the premier female American Holly cultivar, it was developed by Rutgers in 1970s, and it is prized for its bright red berries that cover the holly from mid-fall through winter. It needs a male holly such as the 'Jersey Knight' in order to bear berries. New growth emerges as light green maturing to dark green lustrous leaves. This holly has a true strong leader and grows into a broad, distinctive pyramidal form, making it perfect as an ornamental specimen in the landscape. It requires full sun to partial shade, and well drained acidic soil. Alkaline conditions will yellow leaves. The Jersey Princess attracts birds to the yard as well, and is deer resistant. Its growth rate is moderate, and the holly reaches a height of 35' and a spread of 25' at full maturity.
