Best grown in an area where it has room to spread. Produces showy catkin flowers in the spring followed by edible sweet-flavored nuts. Often roasted to enhance flavor, used in baked goods, ground into flour, or eaten as a raw snack. American hazelnuts are encased in spiny pods. Leftover nuts in the yard help feed wildlife.
